Kitchen Remodel Tips and Tricks: Is Sub-Zero Refrigeration Best?
If you had to take a guess, what do you think your most used kitchen appliance would be? The stove? The microwave?
If you’re like most families, the refrigerator gets the most use. So when you do a kitchen remodel, you want to make sure you get the perfect refrigerator for your new kitchen! And if you’ve done any research at all, you’ve probably heard of Sub-Zero refrigeration.
What is Sub-Zero refrigeration?
Sub-Zero refrigeration is a family-owned company from Wisconsin. They’re well known for being the first ones to create built-in fridges for homes. That means for about 20 years, Sub-Zero fridges were the only ones you could buy that didn’t protrude into your kitchen.
Sub-Zero refrigeration is one of the most recognizable names in home appliances. They claim to keep food colder and fresher with a long, long fridge life. So what’s the trade off?
Unsurprisingly, the price tag. Sub-Zero is one of the most expensive brands out there.
Why is Sub-Zero refrigeration so special?
Other than being built-in and sleek, Sub-Zero has some good things going for it.
Their fridges and freezers each have their own compressor. Other brands have this now too, but essentially it means that moist fridge air doesn’t get mixed up with dry freezer air, making your ice-cream taste like last night’s leftovers.
Sub-Zero refrigeration also has vacuum sealed doors. They need a little bit of elbow grease to open, but it keeps the cold air in much better. So lower energy bills, and colder food. Yay!
There’s lots of other little perks like shelves coated with nano-technology that keep spills from spreading, an air-scrubber that soaks up gas that spoils food, and a digital temperature display.
Is Sub-Zero refrigeration worth it?
Well, according to Consumer Reports, maybe not. Though Sub-Zero were the pioneers in built-in refrigerators, brands like Thermador and Jenn-Air have caught up, with lower price tags.
A Sub-Zero refrigerator will usually run you about $9000, while similar brands like Thermador and Jenn-Air will save you around $2000 for almost the same product.
But why do people spend almost $10000 on nearly anything? Brand recognition, resale value, and to have something other people don’t. If you’re doing a luxury kitchen remodel and want the best of the best–and want other people to know it’s the best of the best–then Sub-Zero refrigeration is the way to go.
If you want to sell your house soon to a high-end buy, then Sub-Zero refrigeration is the way to go. And if you want your snotty neighbor to be jealous, the Sub-Zero refrigeration is definitely the way to go.
But if you want the benefits of Sub-Zero refrigeration without the price tag and don’t care about the name? We say skip it.
